What color are Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes?

The Guardian’s in-person profile refers to Gyllenhaal’s blue eyes, ELLE describes hooded blue eyes during an interview, and The Week calls them intense blue. The Independent likewise describes blue eyes while discussing Enemy. These accounts were written in different years, settings and editorial styles, yet they converge on the same broad category. That agreement is stronger than choosing a single photograph that happens to look gray, greenish or unusually saturated.
The descriptive extras belong to different visual qualities. “Hooded” concerns the eyelid and visible iris area, “intense” concerns the gaze and impact, and metaphorical comparisons express a writer’s impression. None is a biological subtype. The useful conclusion is therefore blue without claiming an exact permanent shade. His appearance can vary with pupil size, light direction, wardrobe, beard and camera processing while the underlying category reported by observers remains unchanged.
What did in-person profiles observe?
The value of these profiles lies in independent repetition. The Guardian’s writer met Gyllenhaal during the period around Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead and uses blue as a direct physical description. ELLE’s Demolition interview takes place in another context and again identifies blue while also noticing the hooded shape. The Week’s Cartier feature emphasizes intensity, and The Independent’s Enemy conversation returns to blue. No one account has to carry the conclusion alone.
Editorial descriptions are not calibrated ophthalmic measurements, so their agreement supports the broad family rather than a hex code or clinical subtype. A writer may notice a different level of brightness depending on seating, daylight, room color and how long the subject holds eye contact. Still, repeated firsthand use of blue across publications gives a transparent evidentiary trail. It is more responsible than repeating an unattributed database field or declaring green from a color-shifted publicity still.
Why can blue eyes look gray or green on screen?
Blue eyes are particularly sensitive to the viewing environment because their appearance depends strongly on light scattering and contrast. Cool, low-saturation grading can make them read gray-blue; warm surrounding colors may make a cooler iris seem more vivid; and reflected greenery can add a temporary green cast in a photograph. Pupil size also changes how much of the colored iris is visible. These are changes in presentation, not evidence that pigment switches between premieres or films.
Photographic iris-grading research uses standardized illumination, camera settings and reference images precisely because unrelated pictures cannot be compared reliably at the pixel level. KQED’s account of Nightcrawler describes performance and physical transformation rather than a new iris color. Gyllenhaal lost weight for Lou Bloom, leaving his eyes looking more sunken, and developed a striking tendency not to blink. Those choices expose and frame the eyes differently, intensifying the character’s predatory attention. A viewer may remember the gaze as unusually bright, dark or unnatural because the surrounding face and behavior changed, not because the source says his natural blue irises were replaced.
That distinction prevents a role from becoming false biographical evidence. Weight loss can alter shadows around the orbit, and reduced blinking can sustain reflections and make eye contact feel uncomfortable. Cinematography and color correction add another layer. None of these observations proves colored contacts, and KQED is not used here to assign color. It is used to explain why Nightcrawler imagery has exceptional visual impact while the natural-color answer continues to come from independent profiles that explicitly say blue.
What about colored contacts or heterochromia?
The reviewed sources do not establish routine colored-contact use by Gyllenhaal. They describe blue eyes in ordinary interview encounters, while the Nightcrawler reporting attributes the role’s unusual gaze to weight, shape and behavior rather than lenses. That does not prove he has never worn contacts for vision, a performance or personal preference. It means a dependable reference should not invent a general contact-lens claim without a makeup professional, production record or direct statement tied to a specific context.
They also do not establish heterochromia. Shadows can fall differently on the two eyes, one pupil can be caught at another angle, and separate catchlights can make the irises look unequal in a still. Those photographic effects are not a diagnosis. No reviewed in-person profile reports stable left-right color difference. Blue for both eyes is the supported broad description, while any medical claim about asymmetry would require clinical evidence that these entertainment and editorial sources do not provide.

Cleveland Clinic supplies general context about eye-color categories, while the academic grading study explains why uncontrolled photographs are weaker than repeated, attributable observations for determining a stable broad label.
The final answer is intentionally restrained: Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes are blue and can look gray-blue or unusually intense under particular conditions. The reviewed evidence does not establish naturally green eyes, routine colored contacts, a Nightcrawler iris transformation or heterochromia.
